The Role of a Steward
A Steward (or Maintainer) is a dedicated community member who serves as a general caretaker for a specific area of the wiki. The goal of stewardship is continuity and oversight, ensuring that the wiki remains healthy and cohesive.
- A Steward IS: A guide, a point of contact, and a consistency advocate.
- A Steward IS NOT: The sole author of those pages or a gatekeeper who prevents others from contributing. A steward does not necessarily do all the updates themselves; they simply keep an eye on the "pulse" of their assigned area.
Core Responsibilities
- Vigilance: Monitoring the "Recent Changes" for their assigned pages to ensure edits align with general community standards.
- Consistency: Checking that new edits or pages in their area follow established wiki templates and formatting.
- Mentorship: Helping new editors who contribute to those specific pages by providing friendly feedback or helping with minor formatting fixes.
Scope and Breadth
Stewards have the flexibility to define their own area of focus based on their interests and capacity. A Steward may be responsible for:
- A single, high-traffic page.
- A specific Category (e.g., a specific House or mechanic).
- A custom set of related pages.
Note on Overlap: To ensure clear lines of communication, the goal is to have little to no overlap between Stewards. Each area should ideally have one primary caretaker.
Volunteering and Retention
The role of a steward is entirely volunteer-based. Any community member in good standing may step forward to steward an unassigned area.
- Attestation: Twice a year, Stewards will be contacted to attest that they wish to continue in their role. This ensures that the list of active maintainers remains accurate and allows volunteers to step down gracefully if their availability changes.
Conflict Resolution and Edits
The stewardship model favors collaboration over authority.
- Discussion First: If a Steward finds an edit they disagree with, they are encouraged to discuss it with the contributor via the relevant Talk Page.
- Escalation: If a consensus cannot be reached or if a situation requires higher-level intervention, the matter should be escalated to the Bureaucrats.
Visibility
While not strictly required, Stewards are highly encouraged to list the pages or categories they maintain on their User Talk page. This helps other editors know who to reach out to for guidance regarding specific sections of the wiki.
